I am a researcher and proponent of transparent research practices at the Center for Open Science. My role at the Center for Open Science is on rewarding transparent research practices. My background is in behavioral ecology, with experience in citizen science and undergraduate advising.
  • Preregistration clarifies the distinction between creating a hypothesis from testing that hypothesis. Try it out (login required) for a $1,000 prize.
  • Open Practice Badges are visual indicators that signal and reward best practices in transparent research. Though some think they're silly, they are effective at changing behavior.
  • Registered Reports are a publishing format in which peer review occurs before results are known. This focuses expert evaluation earlier in the research cycle on the methods and questions, without the strong biases that affect our decisions once results are known.

Background

PictureLooking for cichlids in Costa Rica
Before coming to COS, I worked with researchers from Virginia Tech and with citizen scientists from the Virginia Master Naturalists Program on Collaborative Science. I have also worked with undergraduate biology students at Rutgers University as the Director of Advising. While there, I worked to revise the program learning goals and assessments. My teaching included life science majors and non-majors.

I earned my B.S. in biology from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and my Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Rutgers University.

My dissertation research was on the behavioral ecology and sexual selection among a group of diverse fish, the Cichlids. This work lead me to study how females viewed male-male interactions and how males and females invest in reproduction. My broad interest in behavior and the opportunities available at a large university allowed me to also study undergraduate retention in the sciences.
